National Recording Project

Detail from: Memorial to 158 Squadron by Peter W. Naylor, 2009

Type Sculpture , Statue

Two bronze statuettes, each comprising two seated figures. Larger figure holding smaller on lap looking at open book. NB Limited view.
Since the construction of the Library the two plinths either side of the doorway have remained vacant. 'As part of the commemoration of the establishment of the County Borough it was proposed to fill these plinths with either statues, figures, ornaments or frames which would reflect the character of the period and of the building. Jon Buck's sculptural designs loosely followed the themes of Fellowship and Industry and Family and Education. He used reading and books as a pivot to the design to reflect the purpose and function of the building.'
