Bust of Shakespeare

Type Sculpture

A bust of Shakespeare in the style of the only confirmed portrait.
The bust was specially commissioned by the Birkenhead Library and Scientific Society on the 30th Anniversary of Shakespeare's birth in 1864 and was presented to the free library as a gift from the people of Birkenhead. Since 1864, the bust has been housed in each of the central library buildings with a special collection of books relating to the poet, his life and works. The piece was transferred from the Market Place South Library to the new Birkenhead Library in 1933 and is displayed at the upper landing adjacent to the Reference department.
