Hove Plinth: Creative Crowd Funding Campaign
The Hove Plinth project is a community venture initiated and managed by Hove Civic Society. This brand new cultural attraction on the Brighton and Hove seafront, like the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, will present changing displays of public sculpture. Innovative digital technology will be installed in the plinth to make viewing the sculptures an interactive experience. The aim is to inspire, delight and surprise; attracting new audiences to public art and spearheading a new era of public sculpture in Brighton and Hove.
Works will be commissioned specifically for the Hove Plinth and acquired through loans. Major public sculptures will be displayed for up to 18 months and the site will also provide a platform for short-term displays, performances and events in collaboration with local arts and heritage organisations and schools.
Hove Civic Society is looking to raise £35,000 through this campaign. The total cost of creating the site is just over £100,000. This includes construction, high quality stonework to meet conservation area standards and the demands of the seafront climate, landscaping, cabling and technical infrastructure, and a maintenance fund. Two thirds of the total cost has already been raised through grants, donations and in kind contributions.
The project has built a strong foundation of support with the public, media and arts and heritage organisations. In 2015 it received the Argus Community Star Award for contribution to Arts and Culture by ‘capturing the imagination of people in the city’, following the huge interest shown in last year’s Hove Plinth sculpture competition, which selected three winners from a shortlist of ten maquettes designed for the plinth.
Hove Civic Society is also seeking corporate sponsorship for these first three winning maquettes by Matthew James Davies , Pierre Diamantopoulo and Jonathan Wright respectively, to be made into full-size public sculptures.
Karin Jonzen, the Hove Plinth Project manager, explains that this funding campaign has been launched because ‘We now want to translate all the goodwill into hard cash in order to make the Hove Plinth happen. Many of our great Victorian monuments were funded by public subscription – the crowd funding of the time. Let’s prove that the same spirit is still around!’

Those donating via this online site will receive exciting rewards including art materials, workshops and studio visits, sculpture publications and limited edition prints.
The long term ambition is to keep the sculptures in the city once they have been displayed on the plinth, creating a lasting legacy of public art and a city of sculpture.
