     Seated male figure in 'relaxed' position wearing academic robes. Left arm draped over back of chair. Right hand holding documents resting on knee. Right leg crossed over left.
          John Viriamu Jones, F.R.S., J.P. (1856-1901) Principal and Professor of Physics, University College, Cardiff. John Viriamu Jones was born at Pentreporth, near Swansea; educated at University College, London, and Balliol College, Oxford. He was the Principal of Firth College, Sheffield, 1881-83; elected to Fellowship at Jesus College, Oxford, 1897. He was the first Principal of University College, Cardiff (1883) and the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales (1895-96) He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1894.
