Hopcyn ap Thomas ab Einion Memorial

Summary

Type Marker

Large stone virtually covered by vegetation. Only small part visible to one side with part of carving just visible.
The background to the commission is unclear. It is known that the memorial was unveiled by Alderman Percy Morris while he was Mayor of Swansea in 1955-56. When it was erected a commemorative tablet was bolted to the stone, inscribed with the words Hopcyn ap Thomas ab Einon and there is a suggestion that there may have been a second plaque bearing an English translation of the name. No record has been found of their removal or the exact wording on them.
The Welsh bard Hopcyn ap Thomas ab Einion (c.1330 - post 1403), believed to have been born and lived in the Ynystawe area.
