Millennium Marker

Summary

Type Marker

Upright unpainted iron marker with two arms indicating distances to Brecon (28) and Pontypridd (12). Shaft of marker carved including insects and shells. Marker is on route number 8 of the National Cycle Network and is also on the Taff Trail.
Sponsorship by the Royal Bank of Scotland enabled Sustrans to commission the design of a third Millennium Marker from a Welsh artist which will be used on all routes throughout Britain. Andrew Rowe was commissioned to design this marker. Eventually there will be one thousand cast iron mileposts on the National Cycle Network. The Marker is amongst a number of art projects on the Taff Trail. The 55 mile Trail runs from Cardiff to Brecon. The idea was originally launched in 1988 with the vision of creating a safe and attractive long-distance footpath and cycle way. The project was co-ordinated by the Merthyr and Cynon Groundwork Trust, and a range of organisations including local authorities, private enterprise and the voluntary sector.
