Anstey War Memorial

Type War Memorial

The memorial is in the form of a cenotaph and stands within a triangular plot of land, laid out with lawns and flower beds and bounded by a holly hedge, on the south side of Stadon Road. Constructed of granite ashlar, the memorial comprises a tall, shouldered pedestal with Swithland slate inscription tablets, raised on a base and two octagonal steps and surmounted by a Celtic ringed cross. The paths leading to the circle which surrounds the memorial echo the form of the Celtic cross.

Inscriptions in incised, gilded Roman letters on tablets of Swithland slate: - on the front face of the pedestal: IN HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF ANSTEY / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR KING & COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919. [then follows the list of names, A-H, in two columns, initials and surnames only; the remainder of the names of the 113 dead being on the plaque on the rear face] - on the right side of the pedestal: ALSO OF THOSE WHO / DIED IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 [then follows the list of twenty-one names of the dead, initials and surnames only]
