Slade Green Explosion Memorial

Summary

Type Cross

     A white marble Celtic cross with an octagonal shaft, bulbous at the bottom where it joins on to a tall narrow tapering octagonal shaft with a band of decoration around the top comprising eight stylised flower motifs. This stands on a square base which has the inscriptions on three sides. It is set on a large square footing with a marble edging.
          Commemorates the dead from an explosion at W.V. Gilbert's premises, adjoining the Thames Ammunition Works on Crayford Marshes.

Inscriptions

On west face of base, slate letters inset into marble: BENEATH THIS STONE OF REMEMBERANCE REST / THE MORTAL REMAINS OF SEVEN OF / THE THIRTEEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE / DISASTROUS EXPLOSION WHICH OCCURRED / AT SLADE GREEN ON FEBRUARY 18TH 1924 / SUDDENLY IN THE MIDST OF LIFE / THEIR BRIGHT YOUNG SPIRITS WERE CALLED AWAY / LEAVING THEIR HOMES AND LOVED ONES THE POORER / AND THE SADDER FOR THEIR LOSS / THOSE WHO MOURN THEM HAVE / THE UNFAILING CONSOLATION THAT THEY REST / IN SURE AND CERTAIN HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION / TO ETERNAL LIFE AND THAT THEY ARE SAFE IN THE / HAND OF GOD TILL THE DAY BREAK AND THE / SHADOWS FLEE AWAY Across top of cross in Celtic lettering: IHS On south face of base: EDNA VIOLET ALLEN. / ETHEL PULLEN. / IRENE ANNIE TURTLE. / [italic] INTERRED SEPARATELY IN THIS CEMETARY. / STELLA MARY HUNTLEY. / ALICE SMITHSON SWEENY. / [italic] IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETARY ERITH. / EDWARD JAMES JONES. / [italic] IN LEWISHAM CEMETARY. / On north side of base: [7 names] INTERRED HERE
