Transport Panels


Type Panel

     Two ceramic and mosaic relief panels on a concrete base depicting traditional forms of transport (carriages, trains, boats, buses, locomotives etc.), local buildings, dates, place names and various decorative details including 2 crests/coat of arms (1 with 2 deer in profile holding a shield bearing image of a tree and inscribed with the words CONSILIO ET ANIMIS; another inscribed: LONDON & SOUTH WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY).
     Commissioned by the architects of Sainsbury's Surbiton on the basis of another mosaic mural by the same artists created for the store in Colchester. The artists spent several days in Surbiton researching the local history of the borough.
     Celebrates and commemorates aspects of Surbiton's history particularly its early links with the railway which it established before Kingston in 1838.
