Winsford Boer War Memorial

Summary

Type War Memorial

The memorial in now sited within Winsford Shopping Centre in an open air court opposite the Winsford Civic War Memorial. It is situated on a cobbled area, approximately 400cm wide by 400cm deep, which is marked out by a chained fence. Two octagonal base steps have been recently painted with grey masonry paint. They support a square granite base and pedestal. The pedestal has a rectangular cartouche carved in relief which bears the names of the dead in lead lettering on its front (east face). The plinth is surmounted by a white marble cornice, upon which is a white marble statue of a soldier standing at ease with a tree trunk as a support to his right leg. The soldier is dressed in a uniform appropriate to the Boer War with satchel, water flask and strips of bullets crossed over his torso and hip bag and dagger on his belt. The soldier is holding his rifle in front of him, the barrel resting on the ground, the soldier's hands clasped on to of the butt.
