Type Statue

     This modelled portrait head of the founder and director of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre was made from life studies during Dare's training period in the theatre design department. The sculpture was subsequently donated to the theatre.(2)
     Sir Barry Jackson (1879-1961) founded the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Station Streetin 1913. He had a distinguished career in the Theatre, becoming the governor of The Old Vic, Sadler's Wells and Stratford Festival Theatre (director 1946-48), as well as taking over the Court Theatre, London in 1924 and Kingsway Theatre, London in 1925. Related works : Another portrait bust of the same sitter by William Bloye (also 1957) stands in the foyer of the Repertory Theatre.
