Abstract Relief

Summary

Type Panel

The concrete relief clads the cantilevered wall end and was cast in situ from polystyrene moulds. The angular vertical elements of the design, left with a rough texture, are contrasted with the deep furrows in between which have been decoratively clustered with small jewel-like images, made from impresses of mechanical parts such as springs, nuts and square-ended tubes. Although abstract, the vertical forms are suggestive of a group of figures, perhaps in reference to the function of the building as a community centre.
Poole worked in collaboration with the architect of the community centre Frank Noorish. (1)
